Allergy Medication
There are many varieties of Allergy Medication available on the market today so knowing which is the best medication for your symptoms may not be easy to establish.
Your race, age, gender, religion, place of residence, or even disability will not guarantee you don't have an allergy to something. Any person can have an allergy to something. You may not have any control over whether you have an allergic reaction to something, as sometimes these allergic reactions can be heriditary, (passed on through generations) and it may even skip a generation.
Certain medication works more effectively for some people but not for others.
All Allergy Medication is used to ease the discomfort of the allergy symptoms as you may not be able to avoid the allergy triggers altogether.
These medications can be taken in a variety of ways, ie orally (in pill or liquid form), applied topically (a cream to applied to the skin), liquid droplets into the eyes, or a nasal spray inhaled through the nose.
They can be either prescribed or over the counter depending on how severe the allergy symptoms may be.
If you are taking other medications, such as prescription or recreational drugs, these may also affect the medicines and its desired result. Always notify your general practitioner, nurse, or healthcare professional of all medications, or other medicines and drugs you are taking.
Anti-histamine
The main type of Allergy Medication is Anti-histamine which is a drug that is in a persons body that blocks the receptors for histamine during an allergic reaction.
Histamine is a chemical in a persons body that responds more strongly than necessary to allergens or certain triggers such as pollen, dust, moulds, smoke, fumes, or pet dander (dead skin cells) that are in the atmosphere or environment.
First Generation Anti-histamines, Second Generation Anti-histamines, and Homeopathic Medicines are the most common medications available. Although there are many other practices to Allergy Medication, there is not enough medical evidence to support these theories.
First Generation Anti-histamines are the foundational medicine that was created to treat common allergy symptoms. These are typically effective in their results, however they also provide distressing and sometimes irritating side effects such as drowsiness.
Some of the First Generation Anti-histamine brands you will be able to purchase over the counter are Benadryl, Dimetapp, Vicks Nyquil, Alka Seltzer and Robitussin.
Second Generation Anti-histamines are much more effective in producing the results required, but some people may still experience a mild sensation of drowsiness.
As they are longer lasting, these can be taken on a regular basis which means you may only have to take them once or twice a day reducing the impact at your home, work or social environments.
Some of the Second Generation Anti-histamine brands include Claratin, Zyrtec, and Allegra.
Homeopathic Medicines are a substitute treatment for traditional Allergy Medication. This involves the remedy to be diluted with water or alcohol and vigourously shaken.
This dosage and its potency will depend on the symptoms and how severe they are. The remedy that is taken (one only) will deal with all the symptoms experienced as it will treat the whole body at the same time.
This is the safest Allergy Medication as there are little or no dangerous side effects.
The best Allergy Medication for your symptoms is best diagnosed by your general practitioner, nurse, or healthcare professional.
